Zapotecan refers to an indigenous family of languages origninally spoken in the area of the present-day state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. Today, it is unknown exactly how many distinct (that is, mutually unintelligble) Zapotec languages still exist. The Zapotec languages like all indigenous languages of Mexico are endangered: the number of speakers is declining. This site is devoted to preserving these languages.
Thus far, only one language is included but, hopefully,
with help from others, we will be able to add information about other Zapotec
languages.
