Economic Progress The Russian economy has recovered significantly since the 1998 financial crisis. Strong export earnings have increased Russia's foreign reserves, which have been an important contributor to the country's federal budget. One problems is that increased exports are heavily dependent on natural resources. For example, Oil, natural gas, metals, and timber account for over 80% of exports leaving the country subject to the vagaries of international commodity markets. Russia has a highly educated workforce ready and willing to be employed. However, Manufacturing has made little progress since the crash of 1998, hence there are few job opportunities . The Industrial sector requires huge foreign and domestic investments if Russia is to embark upon a path of sustainable economic growth However, other obstacles abound including a poor business climate that discourages foreign and domestic investment. Also, recent government investigations of Russian businesses have raised fears that the Putin administration, like in the former Soviet Union, will again exercise greater state control over the economy. |
